Commissioned Paintings
Purchases of Joseph Bishop's commisioned art: I am prolific artist, creating new styles, new images, new conversations between paint and canvas daily. I want to try and capture my inner feelings and thoughts in different kinds of paintings. I am interested in opposing concepts and how to portray them with color and form. I am inspired by the human condition in all its struggle and joy. Certain works are created in series, and although I may not have the exact piece shown here, I could produce a similar one. I love my work, and commissions are accepted with joy. Commisioned oil paintings can be purchased directly from me. Contact me by phone or just send me an e-mail.

What makes Joe’s story extraordinary is that he was born with agenesis of the corpus callosum. It is a rare birth defect in which there is complete or partial absence of the corpus callosum. Agenesis occurs when the band of tissue connecting the two hemispheres of the brain fails to develop normally. Joe has what are sometimes called “alien hands” that seem to have a mind of their own, and not in tandem with one another. One hand pulls at his shirt continuously. Sometimes he can literally give himself a black eye. He is non-verbal and uses a wheelchair for mobility. His eyes don’t work in sync, so he turns his head to the side in order to see. He is able to move his eyes to the right and left to indicate yes and no answers.
On his Dynavox communication device, through which an infrared beam hooked to a computer interprets his keystrokes into voice, he laboriously types out, “Painting IS my voice.” When asked what he wants to convey to others through his art, Joe says, “I would tell people that everybody should follow their hearts and souls.
